Downsides of being a programmer in Hong Kong

Are you interested in working at Hong Kong? There are already lots of articles about the good things of working in Hong Kong as a programmer. Hence, I would like to focus on the bad things that you may need to adapt to when working in Hong Kong. First things first, I would like to declare that all points below are only my personal opinion which cannot apply to all companies. You are highly recommended to always discuss with your potential employers about your expectation personally in order to find a perfect fit of your career plan.

High end coding positions are relatively rare

There are many people who like coding and want coding to be their life-long career. Yet, this may not be the case in Hong Kong. Many Hong Kong companies tend to merge managerial roles with high end developer roles. When getting promotion, you should expect to receive more and more operational and managerial duties and less participation in software development. In fact, this is not a bad thing if you like the transition from a coder to a domain expert.
